Gallery: The Boys of BelAmi

In the 1990s, the porn studio BelAmi was the platinum standard for Twinkdom. All twinks were judged against their models. BelAmi was the “Disney of gay porn,” knowm for its soft-focus cinematography, fairytale locales, and of course, its boys, who looked like they’d stepped out of a Greek vase.

The “BelAmi look” was a double-edged sword for a brown boy like me. On one hand, their focus on Eurocentric beauty left POC boys out of the Gay mainstream. On the other hand, there wasn’t much representation of my kind of body. The 90s were all about mass and muscle—a leftover from the AIDS crisis, which demanded that bodies immediately exhibit virility and strength. Slim bodies were still associated, even subconsciously, with wasting and disease. That’s what made the way BelAmi photographed their boys stand out.
