To research my first fiction story, My Sex Doll Is Mad at Me, I scoured the Reddit sex doll community groups for nearly a year. A big part of sex doll subculture is doll shoots. Owners go all out photographing their synthetic companions, some of whom garner their own fan base.

Some of the shoots are stunning high art—a doll dressed as a high priestess—or bizarre, featuring alien dolls or dolls with demon or animal faces. Most were tender in their mundanity: dolls opening fridges or having breakfast in bed. There are no photo credits because most were posted anonymously.
