People will shoot porn with any camera they can get their hands on. From the first daguerreotype to the Polaroid to VHS tapes, we always adopt imaging tech to document sex or stage fantasies. But what if your fetish isn’t physically possible? What if your ultimate fantasy is a three-story-tall penis or shrinking to the size of a pea and sleeping inside your lover’s ass?
In this edition of Synthetic Porn Genres, we cover impossible fetishes: macrophilia (attraction to giants), microphilia (attraction to miniature people), and vorarephilia (devouring fantasies). Turns out, these are quite popular.
I’m no longer shocked by what turns us on, but I’m always struck by how far we’ll go to create images of it. Up until a couple of years ago, if people wanted porn of these niche fetishes, they had to depend on drawings, Photoshop, or CGI. These were time-consuming and photorealism was rarely achieved. I found early attempts that were almost endearing: scrappy, DIY shoots of models posed with miniature plastic figurines, or old trick photography and forced perspective to bring a giant’s foot crashing down on the viewer.
AI can now generate these fantasies with photorealistic detail. While Hollywood grapples with AI, porn is not beholden to the same ethical dilemmas. It’s already adopting the special effects and cinematic flair from blockbusters. The first image I encountered, which inspired this report, was a naked giant climbing the Empire State Building. While it was not very convincing, in a year or so it will be a photorealistic movie. We are now in the Wild West of porn.
While most of the images I came across were playful, campy, and consensual, a few were haunting, like a series showing terrified, tiny women trapped inside a man’s stomach. Hyper-violence and abuse always simmer under porn’s possibilities. Gruesome and illegal -philias are already being generated in the darkest corners of the internet, and with social media’s content regulation weaker every day, it’s only a matter of time before a really bad one escapes into our feeds.
Which brings us to porn’s oldest questions, and the main issues of AI’s most unreal sex scenes: Do these images satisfy desire, or intensify it? As we render more impossible or taboo fetishes, will these images stomp around our culture, or be swallowed quietly into its underbelly?
